MONTEREY VISTA, Calif. — October 29, 2026. A long-discussed narrow and winding section of San Bernabe Drive between Via Ventura and Bartolomea Way has passed an important procurement milestone. The Monterey City Council’s October 20 agenda identified a $1,128,425 construction contract to Guerra Construction Group for a package involving San Bernabe Drive road widening and sidewalk work and a separate Don Dahvee Park trail crossing.
Why San Bernabe Drive needs attention
The Monterey Vista Neighborhood Association describes the target stretch as tight curves crossing a natural gully, where opposing vehicles and pedestrians can have limited room. The construction scope in the city’s procurement materials calls for roadway demolition, grading, retaining walls, new curb and gutter, sidewalks, storm drainage connections, asphalt paving, signage and striping. The objective is to improve access along an established neighborhood road, not open a new through route across Monterey Vista.
What the contract figure does and doesn’t mean
The $1,128,425 is a combined contract amount for two projects. It must not be described as the price of San Bernabe Drive alone. The road’s earlier NCIP planning balance and the combined bid are different accounting figures, and the city has not assigned the full package value exclusively to the road.
The neighborhood association reports that the City Council approved the contract in October and anticipates construction around spring 2027. That is a forecast, not evidence that crews have already started in October 2026. Residents should expect separate city notices on access, temporary restrictions and dates before construction begins.
What is different from the Munras/Via Arboles project?
Another local plan involves curb ramps near Munras Avenue and Via Arboles. Although the city’s procurement program discussed work at several locations, San Bernabe is its own geographically defined road-widening project, and this report should not be confused with the separate $125,000 neighborhood proposal for the ramps.
