MONTEREY VISTA, Calif. — October 29, 2026. Drivers unfamiliar with Monterey can encounter confusing freeway approaches at the intersection of Munras Avenue and Soledad Drive. The Monterey Vista Neighborhood Association has tracked an improvement proposal, MV-07, to place clearer signs directing motorists toward both Highway 1 entrances, with a historical planning estimate of $25,000.

The problem with where the signs are now

The neighborhood’s published nomination says some existing signs are too close to the freeway entrances to be helpful to people first approaching the Munras–Soledad junction. Earlier directional information could give visiting drivers more time to choose a correct lane or turn rather than make a last-second maneuver.

Does this change freeway ramps?

No. The MV-07 proposal seeks directional signage, not a new freeway connector, intersection widening or different traffic-light timing. As a project idea it is related to Highway 1 access, but it is geographically and functionally different from the neighborhood’s separate Munras/Via Arboles pedestrian curb-ramp application.

What the old estimate does and doesn’t prove

The association lists $25,000 and describes the request as connected to an older 2011 cutoff project (CW-41). This is historical project information; the current city budget, procurement status and installation date have not been verified. Drivers should obey actual installed signs and lane markings rather than expect proposed wayfinding features to be present.

Who should confirm the current plan?

City of Monterey Engineering and, where necessary, Caltrans District 5 would need to review how any signs fit the controlled roadway and entrance ramps. Residents can request status under project MV-07, and review the neighborhood association’s NCIP entries or city agendas for any later approval or available design.
